ANTIQUE CRANBERRY OPALESCENT SWIRL PATTERN STRAW HOLDER. Likely suspects include Northwood, Jefferson, and Dugan glass compa. The piece parallels an item pictured in the book. Opalescent Glass From A to Z. By Heacock & Elmore (page 176, figure 896).
The straw holder has a bulbous base and a cylindrical body with a "ring" near the top. It's quite tall and measures just under 10" with the lid removed (12" tall with lid in place). The diameter of the top opening is approximately 2 7/8.
The silverplate lid also has a swirl design but is not original to the piece. I removed the lid from an antique pickle castor, but it also fits this piece well (although not perfectly) and displays nicely. It's guaranteed to be an antique piece and NOT a modern remake.Condition of this hard-to-find straw holder is EXCELLENT with chips or cracks. This fragile piece was obviously well cared for. There is some minor rim roughness along the ground top edge and a small surface imperfection underneath the base. Overall, this collectible straw holder looks fantastic and displays beautifully.
It would make a fine addition to any collection. Please take a close look at the many photos I've provided and judge condition for yourself. These fragile straw holders are quite scarce and most were broken through the years. Showing Container With Lid Removed.
